Summary: A reminder and review of Google's SMS service. You can find driving directions, stock quotes, phone numbers and more from any SMS-capable phone. (Unless you’re a total luddite, your phone is SMS-capable).

Google SMS

If you’re not using Google’s SMS (short message service), then it’s time to get with it. Last October, Google launched this service and has been adding features ever since. You can find driving directions, stock quotes, phone numbers and more from any SMS-capable phone. (Unless you’re a total luddite, your phone is SMS-capable). All you have to do is send your text message to 46645 (GOOGL on most phones).

So, instead of calling 411 on your cell, use Google’s SMS. Type in your query – such as the name and state – and send it to 46645. Google will send back the results within a minute. In the end, the Google service can save you from directory assistance and airtime charges.

The service is great for men who refuse to ask for directions. Type in a query -- like the address plus the zip code or even just an airport code and send it to 46645. You’ll get driving directions along with estimated travel time.

If your date is trying to impress you with a large vocabulary, don’t fret. You can SMS Google for word definitions. Enter 'D' before the word and wait for the response.

There are currently no fees to use the service, but standard text messaging rates from your cell provider do apply.
